Position Summary:

Aveda, America’s premier creator and marketer of plant-based haircare, skincare, make-up, PureFume™ and lifestyle products seeks a Hair Care Chemist (Formulation) to help Formulate personal care products from conceptualization to production, including improving existing products for performance and regulatory compliance. This would include collaborating with Product Development and Marketing, collaborating with 3rd party manufacturers to create and produce new products, formulating new products and troubleshooting issues on existing formulations, coordinating efforts within R&D to successfully commercialize new or improved products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate new personal care products from conceptualization to production scale

  • Reformulate existing personal care products

  • Determine and perform appropriate cost reductions (raw materials)

  • Perform packaging stability and feasibility tests and report results and conclusions

  • Sourcing of new, novel raw materials which meet Aveda's philosophy

  • Sourcing for the latest technology through shows, seminars, suppliers and outside consultants

  • Coordinate clinical performance testing and salon performance testing

  • Coordinate safety, micro and claims testing

  • Coordinate panel tests, create evaluation forms and summaries - internal, professional, consumer

  • Create and maintain product master document files including safety, stability, regulatory, OTC, etc.

  • Function as a key player in the marketing domain meetings

  • Help create and adhere to product launch timelines

  • Create and maintain manufacturing procedures for compounding

  • Supervise and coordinate pilot batches

  • Supervise and coordinate first production batches

  • Coordinate manufacturing and resolve challenges with co-packers

  • Provide claims and copy information to marketing, education and creative

  • Read and edit product collateral

  • Provide paperwork for new formula and new raw materials to operations

  • Provide specifications and other information to QC to receive and test new ingredients and finished goods

  • Address customer service questions on the products of their domain

  • Create educational booth and disseminate information at various Aveda shows

  • Training and supervising technicians and temporary employees




Science Bachelor's Degree


5 years of experience – formulation preferred


  • Formulate new personal care products or reformulate existing products, includes writing formulas, batch making, testing, stability, micro, performance.

  • Competence with computer systems for formula management and testing.

  • Providing technical information to internal partners.

  • Working with suppliers on new raw materials and technologies aligned with mission.
