Position Summary:


America’s premier creator and marketer of plant-based haircare, skincare,

make-up, PureFume™ and lifestyle products seeks a Research Physical Chemist. This

is a corporate upstream hair innovation technology position that requires a

physical chemist training with

background in colloidal chemistry and delivery systems. Responsibilities

include the development and analysis of

new technologies/concepts focusing on the thermodynamics analysis of

macroscopic chemical properties their

influence on physical properties and chemical structures and ensure their design and use that can meet technology objectives and

conforms to the appropriate scientific principles and findings based on sound applied and statistical research.

Requires proven skills in the area of

colloidal chemistry ,delivery systems, micelle influence . Provides scientific leadership and collaboration working with a

cross functional team to develop technologies and products that meet the

company’s strategic and financial

goals. Work closely with the team’s Vice

President of Innovation, Vice President of Product Development, Executive

Director of Investigative Research and Executive Director of Botanical Research

as a key contributor to the groups’ overall strategic direction and selection

and assessment of technologies and methodologies. The technologies and concepts

from the ELC corporate upstream group will be leveraged to the formulation teams

for use in Aveda/Bumble etc

Key Responsibilities:

Research and Development

  • Identifyexternal resources to outsource and /or collaborate to develop newtechnologies, conceptsand botanicallysourced chemical entities.

  • IPdevelopment and review

  • Conductresearch to identify and develop new/improved technologies, formulas, test methods,claims , screening assays and ingredients.

  • Developappropriate experimental plans,technical models and hypotheses for technical problems/researchto guide technology development .

  • Work closelywith Melville material science , SAS andBSRgroups

  • Develop/implementkey measurement methods of analysis.Ensure that they are updated as necessary.

  • Providewritten and graphical summaries of methods, results and conclusions on aconsistent basis.

  • Transitionresearch discoveries into practical application at Aveda.

Science Leadership

  • Work withR&D team as internal resource for technical information pertaining toassigned projects.

  • Presentresearch proposals, new product ideas and test results to management team.

  • Providetechnical training and coaching to technical and marketing personnel.

  • Publish andpatent discoveries as appropriate.

Professional and BusinessRelationships

  • Leveragerelationships with respected academicians and practitioners to support currentand develop future research projects.

  • Conductpresentations to senior management as needed .

  • Providetechnical information to PD .as needed

  • Other dutiesas assigned



Ph..D in physical chemistry


New graduate,

previous post doc or 1-2 years experience in industry ,


  • Knowledge ofresearch literature, core principles and processes related topersonal care products.

  • Knowledge ofpatent literature, and ability to read, assess and provide an understanding ofthe patent art.

  • Understandingof common and best practices within the competitive landscape.

  • Knowledge ofglobal markets and working knowledge of regulatory requirements andlimitations.

  • Strongorganizational, multi-tasking and problem solving skills.

  • Excellentoral and written communication skills required, including giving presentationsto all levels of management and customers.
