Executive Director, Formulation
Leads formulation of hair care/color products. Set technical direction, in partnership with Marketing, Product Development and Creative Stylists, to ensure products meet guest and business and expectations, goals and timelines. Fosters an awareness of competitive activity, sorting through key trends to ensure the EL technology and products will surprise competition and delight consumers. Ensure EL is focused on the biggest opportunities. Ensures lab work is to GLP standards. Ensure lab focus on continually improving safety. Co-ordinates between R&D functions. Functions as the key R&D “voice” with other functions, particularly Product Development and Marketing. Actively manages and leads of resolution of critical path challenges from an R&D perspective. Grows the skills of his/her team in general skills area (communication, decision making, relationship management, improving processes, etc.).

Ensures all new and reformulated hair care products meet target performance, stability, and aesthetic goals while maximizing formula’s % natural / naturally derived content. Requires careful and constant opportunity prioritizations to ensure limited resources are working on most critical and highest potential projects.
Understands and champions Aveda mission aligned formulation approaches, including botanicals as actives and green chemistry.

Collaborates on claims, demos, and visualization (CDV) in partnership with the Claims, Product Development and Marketing teams, with particular focus on early identification of compelling demos and visuals which will enhance storytelling and create a CDV pipeline.
Oversees commercialization of new / reformulated Aveda products, ensuring key milestones are met. Co-ordinates between R&D functions. Ensures early partnership between formulation and process development “at the bench” to facilitate formula / process fit. Collaborate with Process Engineering to ensure the best possible process is identified (consistent product and stability, minimized time/energy, etc.). Ensures early assessment of formula with potential packaging options.
Functions as the key R&D “voice” with other functions, particularly Product Development and Marketing. Actively manages and leads of resolution of critical path challenges from an R&D perspective.
Understands special requirements for OTC (Over the Counter drugs) formulation and ensures OTC protocols are followed for any OTC products. Oversees dossier development (focused on formulation) for OTCs.
Educates, mentors, and supervises less experienced technical personnel in formulation, particularly to build skills and knowledge.
Grows the skills of his/her team in general skills area (communication, decision making, relationship management, improving processes, etc.)
Acts as key person with strategic supplier partners.
