Position Summary:


America’s premier creator and marketer of plant-based haircare, skincare,

make-up, PureFume™ and lifestyle products seeks The Vice President of Global

Product Development to develop and drive the creation of innovative products

that meet the overall Aveda brand mission. Conceive and develop highly creative

concepts, products and rituals to support all Aveda product domains – hair

care/ styling/ color, skincare, professional, body and color. Ensure all products are launched on time, meet

high quality standards and most importantly always support Aveda mission

Key Responsibilities:


  • Create a robust innovation pipeline that

promotes growth in all key regions while sustaining breakthrough innovation for

the fastest growing markets. Present new

product concepts to SVP and Senior Management.

  • Define a Product Innovation Strategy that

supports brand growth in both retail and professional distribution; identify

need-gaps within existing product line-up and white space opportunities.

  • Partner closely with Marketing,

Packaging and R&D throughout the development process.

  • Direct R&D in the detailed

development of new or reformulated products and travel to all Estee Lauder

plants and third party manufacturers to provide on-site approvals when needed.

  • Employ Corporate Innovation work in

platforms/ insights/ technology to add value to Product Development activities

for Aveda.

  • Initiate the creation of competitive

reviews of global activity and present in depth details to management.

  • Attend and present at industry

conferences and lectures in order to stay abreast of market landscape.

  • Provide product support to the regions

as needed (roundtable meetings, press events, etc)

  • Lead Product Development team to follow

through on the entire product development process as follows:

  • Seek

out story angles, new ingredients, new clinical innovation and associated

imagery to support concepts.

  • Reformulate/Update

existing products. Initiate, track and

report all test results. Generate claim

opportunities based on data.

  • Create

product concept sheets and product profiles to support each new idea/innovation.

  • Approve

Lab Standard, FVL, Pilot and First Production Batches (on-site if necessary).

  • Ensure

all products are formulated with technology that substantiates claims and supports

desired benefits.

  • Review

all PR, Education and Copy materials for alignment of communication as it was

intended with development and ensure accuracy and consistency of content.

  • Present new product launches in

partnership with R&D and Marketing to Education, PR, Consumer Relations,

Creative, and International Groups.

  • Collaborate with Legal team throughout

the development process in order to obtain their alignment upfront on concepts

and desired claims language. Facilitate

the development of product concept sheets and profiles.

  • Cross-functional partnerships with

Global Marketing, R&D, Packaging, Global Education, Public Relations, Creative

and Quality Assurance:


  • Provide

detailed product concepts to fuel three-year innovation pipeline.

  • Create

robust product profiles for every new product launch and deliver key product

points and messages in product profile turnover meeting.

  • Communicate

reformulation requirements prior to initiating development work.

  • Provide

strategic influence to support brand needs.


  • Communicate

strategic direction for new product development and partner with lab to support

a strategy for future innovations.

  • Work

closely with R&D/BRD to identify new technologies, ingredients and formulas

for new product innovations.

  • Develop

breakthrough innovation by collaborating with R&D centers and innovation

hubs across the globe – NY, California, Korea, Japan, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

  • Partner

with outside vendors to leverage their unique capabilities to develop new

formulas that cannot be supported internally.

  • Motivate

and support chemists and technicians to obtain the highest quality standard.

  • Evaluate

and approve consumer test designs to support product quality.

  • Generate

and review executive summaries from final test results. Assess and communicate implications of test

results on development of product to senior management.

  • Work

with R&D, BRD, Clinical and Sensory to generate new storytelling and claims



Direct Product Development team to:

  • Provide

clear direction to Packaging on all formulation aspects including ingredients, actives,

viscosity, color, and formula limitations.

  • Evaluate

and approve proposed package submissions for evacuation, aesthetics, and


  • Ensure

availability of components for launch samples (PR, Forecast, Market and


  • Expand

our resources with suppliers.


  • Collaborate

with lead esthetician to ensure all new product development leverages authentic

ayurvedic inspiration and supports the needs of Aveda estheticians.

  • Partner

with Pro Spa Education team in the validation and integration of new formulas

within the spa service.

  • Work

with Pro Spa Education in the Clinical validation of all new Pro Spa formulas.

  • Present

new product innovation details – key technology, benefits, claims, usage and

fit within overall product architecture.

  • Provide

reformulation information for existing line so materials remain updated.

  • Review

and provide feedback on all training support materials.

  • Offer

Education presentation support as needed for new products regionally and

  • Collaborate

with SVP Creative to leverage Aveda stylist network to ensure hair formulas

(care/ styling/ color) meet performance standards.

  • Present

new product innovation details – key technology, texture and development inspiration.

  • Create

optimum climate for maximum creativity and support culture for learning and

opportunity to take risks (safely).


  • Create

and maintain all product standards.

  • Establish

quality guidelines for new products.

  • Develop, lead and mentor a high

performing product development team by investing in their development and

growth in order to drive performance and professional growth.

  • Manage department budget – fiscal





  • Undergraduate

College degree.


  • Position

requires 15 years relevant work experience in product development across

multiple product categories – hair, treatment, color.


  • Proven

track record of successful new product innovations.

  • Position

requires strong leadership skills and project management skills.

  • Excellent

written and verbal communications; strong presentation skills, ability to

personally organize and set priorities and to drive other people.

  • Ability

to successfully organize and manage multiple complex development programs.

  • Travel

to International markets required (approximately 25%).
