Our Travel Retail APAC region is seeking to appoint a Shopper Insights and Category Strategy Director for their Asia Pacific (APAC).

This position is based in the Singapore offices of Estee Lauder Companies’ Travel Retail APAC HQ, and reports to the Vice President of Shopper Insights and Category Strategy based in New York, with a matrix to the VP of Integrated Marketing, TR APAC. The successful candidate will also sit on the leadership team of the Travel Retail APAC region and therefore will be a close partner to the President of the TR APAC region, and the Regional Business Directors for our brands.

This role is extremely high profile. It requires sophisticated subject matter expertise across qualitative and quantitative research approaches, and the ability to explain complex data in an engaging and persuasive way to a senior and international audience. Thus, the successful candidate should have worked in an insights leadership role within a corporate setting, have demonstrable experience of high level presentations and crucially, must be an insights professional with a deep knowledge of the Chinese consumer market, cosmetics and beauty.

Typically this role is focused on shoppers, and therefore has a heavy retail and retail dynamics focus, and also includes as a part of this, category strategy, meaning understanding key category and subcategory dynamics and supporting growth in these via provision of insight based strategic recommendation.

This role would include the following responsibilities:

  • Work with the President of TR APAC, Regional brand directors and VP of Integrated Marketing, TR APAC, to establish a strategic, focused, shopper insights and category strategy program for the fiscal year, ensuring adequate budget allocation. To do this, you will be expected to digest business questions and recommend creative and innovative insights solutions which support your stakeholders in answering these questions.

  • Act as the expert on the ground to the VP Shopper Insights and Category Strategy, based in New York, committing to regular knowledge sharing, supporting her in elements of high level strategy and business question solving.

  • Additionally work with internal commercial stakeholders to sustain our research relationships with key retailers, and ensure opportunities for collaboration are identified.

  • Work directly with Research vendors, agencies and tools to oversee the roll out of the insights projects you commission, keeping internal stakeholders updated, and ensuring deliverables are provided in a timely manner, and crucially shared appropriately to ensure actions can be taken.

  • Lead your team of two analysts (one based in Shanghai) and ensure their skills are appropriately deployed across the projects you commission, as well as supporting their growth and development and coaching their research skills.

  • Act as the ambassador for evidence based decision making within the region, offer up consultancy where required, conduct regular outreach and sharing sessions and ensure your industry knowledge stays updated.

  • Work with the wider global team of Travel Retail insights professionals to arrive at collaborative projects and deliverables with meaning beyond just your region; ie passenger insights, category gap analyses, category innovation studies etc.

  • As with all insights professionals, develop a passion for our brands and consumers which enhances the outputs you deliver


The successful candidate would be a degree holder, who has a wealth of experience working at a director level within an insights agency and or in-house in a corporate insights role, with significant hands on responsibility for running research projects and leading analysis.

To be successful in this role, you need to possess an ability to present data creatively. You would be a strong public speaker, possessing diplomacy, discretion, excellent listening skills and be articulate in both the spoken and written English and Mandarin.

You should also be passionate about brands, travel, media, technology, social media, and trends.

This role will require you to travel within the APAC region.
