The role of EMEA Online Engineer is an opportunity to form part of a tight-knit and dynamic team tasked with developing and supporting features and functionality on ELC Online’ s bespoke e-commerce platform which serves nearly 100 sites in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. This position joins us at an exciting time during or migration to our new Cloud based Microservices platform which extensively leverages the latest technology, tooling and modern DevOps practices to ensure a fantastic developer and customer experience. We are looking for a driven and successful developer with a proven history of working in the digital industry and a passion for challenge and self-improvement.

This role will involve working in a globally distributed team of highly experienced and talented developers, designers, and project managers, involved throughout the entire project life cycle from scoping and analysis, development and documentation through to post-launch support and updates.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Implement site redesigns, features and enhancements to existing web sites and new business launches

  • Ensure the ELC Online codebase is lean and consistent, minimising unnecessary complexity, divergence and duplication

  • Be an integral part of the ELC Online engineering culture, taking an active part in curating our code, documentation and tooling, participating in peer code review and helping to establish best practices

  • Collaborate with business teams to understand requirements and leverage technical expertise to enhance any request

  • Provide feedback on creative concepts, as it relates to technical feasibility

  • Create proof of concept prototypes to help with the selection of solutions

  • Provide estimates for development work to include analysis, programming and testing

  • Provide appropriate feedback on the status of project work or problem resolution

  • Keep open and continuous communications with project managers and other members of team regarding workload and project challenges

  • Work alongside design agencies and project management teams to deliver work on time and to specification

To succeed, candidates must have the ability to prioritise their time effectively, to deliver projects on time and to specification. You will have good written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, and a sharp attention to detail.

The applicant will be fully up to date with the latest in digital innovation; the kind of person for whom tinkering with technical ideas is a common out of hours practice. As part of a global engineering team, they will also be expected to form strong relationships with peers around the world and be comfortable working in a collaborative fashion to achieve common goals.

Candidates will be expected to be willing to occasionally work extended hours when required, and be available to support deployments outside of business hours when needed.


Technical Skills:

  • Must have experience with object-oriented PHP, Perl or similar web development programming languages

  • Strong front-end web development skills with familiarity of baseline HTML, JavaScript and CSS a must, as well as modern web development libraries and frameworks such as jQuery, React, Node.js, and SCSS

  • Familiarity with continuous integration and deployment concepts including tools such as Jenkins

  • Linux command line experience, including version control systems such as Git

  • Experience with ticketing and project tracking products such as the Atlassian suite: Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket

  • Ability to write clean, consistent and secure code, adhering to programming standards

  • SQL and database management systems experience advantageous

  • Agile development experience advantageous

  • Drupal experience advantageous

  • BSc in computer science (or equivalent) or successful experience in a similar role
