- Plan and direct the activities of the SHEQ Department within the supply chain environment, to ensure that SHEQ risks are kept to a minimum through effective compliance with SHEQ policies, procedures and legislation.
KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide Health, Safety and Environmental training and instruction.
Assist with the promotion of environmental health & safety policies, procedures & operational practices
Provide advice and assist in environmental health & safety projects within sphere of competency for the distribution center, office, and retail store environments.
Provide leadership, expertise, support, direction, and assistance in facility health & safety matters.
Ensure that operating facilities are in compliance with applicable laws and conforming to the corporate Environmental and Safety Management System (ESMS) requirements.
Maintain and develop the ESMS, ensuring alignment with current legislation and corporate requirements.
Lead and facilitate a culture of safety consciousness and continuous improvement across all business functions.
Provide advice and guidance on SHEQ matters within sphere of knowledge and refer requests for assistance to senior personnel where necessary.
Contribute to and implement the policies, procedures and systems relating to the environmental & safety compliance.
Develop and amend site SHEQ policies and procedures as required by business needs and changing legislation
Investigate accidents and conduct root cause analysis, reporting accidents when required and maintaining all accident records.
Work in conjunction with Department Managers to assist in the compilation of Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, policy writing, training and BBS programs.
Develop and deliver health and safety training to encourage safe working practices across all business functions.
Conduct and report on EHS MS Audits and inspections to ensure site compliance with Safety and Environmental processes, procedures legal compliance register.
Identify significant exposures and recommend appropriate action to senior management for compliance with regulations and company policy.
Maintain all records – in both paper and electronic format.
Undertake monthly reporting on Key SHEQ metrics as required at both site and corporate levels.
Provide any EHS support as required at Department / Corporate level meetings including monthly Safety Committee meeting attendance.
Assist in the specification / selection of the onsite work wear, footwear and PPE contract.
Control and administer the onsite fire team and fire marshals, devise a programme of fire evacuation drills across the site and carry out the programme.
Coordinate Fire Risk Assessments ensuring controls are in place to meet legal requirements.
Ensure effective management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste collections from site(s) is in place to meet corporate and legal requirements.
Undertake minor projects and assist in major projects. Provide support to the Projects team and change management activities.
Maintain an awareness of new and existing relevant laws, rules and regulations, and takes actions appropriate to ensure timely compliance and communication to appropriate departments.
Coordinate EHS Capital funding and planning.
Coordinate outside consultant partnership initiatives as required.
Ensure close communication with EMEA EAS community
Point of contact for all regulatory authorities, e.g. fire department, health inspector, etc.
REQUIREMENTS & EXPERIENCE
Formal qualification in Safety Management General Industry or equivalent
KEY PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Strong interpersonal skills to persuade, influence, advise and direct employees of all levels on Environmental Health & Safety and Quality issues.
Good technical and written communication skills to ensure legal compliance regarding policies, procedures, training programmes and EHS Management systems.
Ability to handle high volume of correspondence - internal and external with a technical content.
Ability to make decisions in an emergency situation to minimise any adverse effects on the company or an individual.
Strong analytical skills, accident investigation, risk analysis - cause - effect, statistical analysis.
Self-management and motivation – able to plan own work schedule and requirements.
Frequent contact with senior management, internal and external, consultants and Regulatory bodies.
Good PC skills to manipulate and present data.
Knowledge and experience with South African Environmental, Health & Safety regulations.
Knowledge of ergonomics and industrial hygiene.
Knowledge and experience with behaviour-based (BBS) safety programs.
