  • Position based in Melville, NY

  • Independently prepare and prosecute US patent applications through all stages to either issuance or abandonment for inventions in chemical formulations and processes and mechanical inventions in simple packaging and components

  • Significant technology related agreement drafting and negotiating experience (e.g. joint development, exclusivity, MSAs, and supply agreements)

  • Develop robust patent strategies

  • Conduct patent due diligence for M&A transactions

  • Supervise and assist outside counsel handling US and foreign patent prosecution of US-based inventions

  • Assist in preparing opinions on validity and infringement under the supervision of VP Patent Counsel

  • Independently train scientists on IP legal principles as well as the various IP-related forms and processes

  • Protect ELC from financial and reputational risk by developing and communicating critical risk mitigation and margin protection patent strategies

  • Advise and consult with clients to identify critical legal issues, assess potential legal options, and provide individuals and teams with an analysis and range of possible legal solutions

  • Exercise good business judgment related to company legal matters

  • Experience drafting and prosecuting design patents a plus

  • Experience with litigation and/or administrative challenges a plus


  • JD from top law school

  • 8 years of experience

  • English

  • Admission in good standing to the Bar of the State of New York and the United States Patent and Trademark Office

  • Cosmetic and/or OTC industry experience highly desirable

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, engineering (chemical, biomedical, mechanical), or similar

  • Practical working knowledge of organic chemistry and mechanical technology sufficient to prepare and prosecute patent applications on formulas, ingredients, processes and basic cosmetic packaging and components

  • Excellent writing skills

  • JD from a top law school

  • Licensed in NY; registered Patent attorney

  • 8 years of patent experience at AM Law 200 firm and/or Fortune 1000 company

  • Global experience; experience working with multi-national companies

  • Ability to form strong relationships with business leaders and serve as a counterpart to the R&D team

  • Ability to execute in a complex matrixed environment
