Associate Fellow, R&D Formulation

This role is to design new formulations that synergistically leverage novel manufacturing procedures, to create new product benefits and performance, there by delivering a step change in product innovation for ELC. The role will support development of a range of opportunities within either the treatment or makeup category and report to the leader of the Process Innovation Dept within Global R&D.

Scope will cover both development of new products as well as optimization of existing product portfolio to drive improved efficiencies and cost savings. The incumbent will be also be responsible for conducting research within the assigned technical areas in order to assess ‘proof of principle’ feasibility including criteria such as efficacy, stability, reproducibility.

  • Provide technical leadership on the assigned projects, co-defining required plan to enable ‘proof of concept’ feasibility for new product / process propositions. Creates technical milestones and defines resource requirement.

  • Defines creative new / non-conventional approaches to formula design and ingredient selection inspired by practices both within the cosmetic industry and in adjacent food & pharma industries.

  • Contributes to definition of IP strategy for new developments and generates supporting data.

  • Collaborates effectively with internal partners across Global R&D (including Formulation, SAS, Physical Testing, Material Science teams) and external suppliers to ensure comprehensive approach to robust product qualification.

  • Provide written and verbal communication to senior stakeholders on scientific learning, technical feasibility and required steps to enable commercial readiness.

  • Trains and supervises technician in day to day laboratory work / procedures.

  • Designs technical transfer plan with Process Innovation Engineer for product transfer to Brand and Global TSO teams. Including definition of tentative specification, approved product stability profile

  • Collaborates with Corporate and Brand PD teams to identify new product forms and creates prototypes.

  • Collaborates with Package Innovation team to create prototype products to pair with new package designs/delivery systems .

  • Collaborates with Process Innovation engineers to deliver trial protocols, acceptance criteria and provide prototype formulations to be trialed.

  • Ability to perform experiments independently and with support of laboratory technician.


Running experiments in a laboratory environment and helping conduct trials on pilot scale manufacturing equipment.

In depth knowledge of cosmetic formulation (skincare and makeup preferred) and raw materials within the cosmetic/beauty industry.

Ability to define technical models that describe the physical structure of product formulations and how they may be impacted by process transformations.

-Minimum BA/BS in a scientific field (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering)
