This role will support the Product Safety and Toxicology team in both assuring the safety of cosmetic ingredients and participating in research activities to develop novel computational methodologies for cosmetic safety assessment. An integral part of the job will be the evaluation of ingredient safety data, providing safe use level guidance to project teams and documenting safety assessments to support ingredients in marketed formulations. Key research responsibilities will focus on the development and implementation of computational tools to predict safety at the ingredient level through to final formulations. The successful candidate will dynamically collaborate with a team of toxicologists, chemical management, regulatory specialists and scientists globally.
Problem Solving – Proficient in toxicology methods and principles. Ability to communicate effectively and obtain relevant information from internal colleagues and outside collaborators to facilitate the safety evaluation of cosmetic ingredients. Independently review and advise on safe ingredient usage levels along with preparing documentation to substantiate use for regulatory submission (CPSR / PIF ingredient summaries, regulatory safety assessments, etc.). Expert technical strength in data analysis and computational toxicology / model development. Perform research to develop novel computational solutions for integrating ingredient and finished cosmetic formula safety data to predict safety outcomes. Longer term activities include engaging staff across departments to implement work flows and developed computational models to users of varying technical ability.
Decision Making – Provide recommendations on raw material safe use levels and participate in team pre- and post-market product safety support for ELC global operations. Prioritize and respond to multiple requests in a fast-paced environment. Collaborate with team members to ensure research is aligned with strategic priorities.
Independence of Action and Accountability - Maintain professional excellence to respond with agility to address internal and external inquiries. Demonstrate ability to conduct both independent and directed research in a collaborative multi-disciplined environment. Understand and follow SOP, best practices and work procedures required for toxicology and product safety activities.
Leadership - Provide leadership in scientific defense of Estee Lauder Company's cosmetic ingredients and products. Actively seek out new opportunities and novel solutions for computational approaches to impact on the safety assessment of cosmetic formulations. Mentor and/or coach junior staff.

Degree in Toxicology or related fields with experience in developing and applying computational / in silico approaches for the safety evaluation of cosmetic ingredients and formulations. A minimum of 6 years of experience working in the cosmetic or personal care product fields. Required skills include expertise in traditional and computational risk assessment methodologies for raw material and formulations. Strong technical background in biology and chemistry with an emphasis on scientific data evaluation, machine learning and model implementation. Demonstrated experience with computer programming using open-source tools (including R, Python and/or KNIME) is a must. Ability to collaborate across departments, communicate effectively and lead in scientific discussions.
