Director, Packaging Operations - New Business/Brand Regulatory Compliance

Brand: Estée Lauder Companies Corporate Departments


Principle Objective: Support the Estēe Lauder mission and values for responsible citizenship and stewardship in all global package development initiatives with our new business partners by ensuring that packaging is compliant with established global guidelines as well as regulations either taking effect or on the foreseeable horizon. Support the Pkg Development activity as the Brand ramps up and during the integration process.


Due Diligence Remediation Plans

  • Review findings and remediation plans developed during diligence in the area of package development and safety/regulatory compliance

  • Outline approach to audit/determine the brands’ package development and compliance skills/expertise across areas that may not have been covered in diligence, e.g., interview key team members, external vendors, etc.

  • Develop strategy/plan with the brand team to address any issues identified and oversee execution

Development of New Packaging

  • Support brands in the development of any new packaging (brands would continue to leverage non-ELC firms in the development of packaging; however, this role would provide support as a subject matter expert)

  • Engage Packaging Design as the single point of contact (SPOC) as required to support the brands

  • Suggest existing/historic ELC packaging that brands could potentially leverage to improve speed to market, reduce costs, and enhance quality

  • Provide Outline direction to Pkg Ops OLG for entry into PDS

Safety, Legal, & Regulatory Compliance

  • Educate the brands’ leadership teams on safety and regulatory requirements and the importance of compliance, i.e. clearly communicate potential risks

  • Help brands define their quality standards for packaging

  • Work with manufacturer to develop packaging specifications and backfill historical information into PDS

  • Define package testing protocols

  • Oversee package testing (conducted internally be ELC)

  • Share package testing results with the brand and discuss implications (brand will sign off on packaging)

  • Interface with Legal to have them signs off on packaging label based on planned distribution

  • Inform brand of changes in the environment (e.g., regulatory, etc.) that could impact their current/future packaging; support brand in making modifications to address

Risk Management

  • Identify risk proactively across the brands

  • Ensure the brands’ leadership teams know that it is their responsibility to identify and communicate any areas of risk or potential risk

  • Provide support to mitigate potential concerns, threats, and risks



  • Minimum BS Degree in field of Packaging Science, Chemistry, or Engineering

Direct Expertise

  • 8 years Package Development experience in cosmetic and/or regulated packaging industry

  • Pharmaceutical industry and/or regulatory exposure a plus

  • Knowledge of legal environment via regulatory or supply management experience

  • Proficiency with computer systems, specifications, and data management/reporting (Excel as well)

  • Experience with Artwork Development

  • Project Management experience

  • Knowledge of Estee Lauder PDS/RDS systems.

Technical Competency

  • Working knowledge of packaging materials, decoration techniques, and processes used in manufacturing of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging

  • Working knowledge of test methods used in assay and certification of packaging materials

  • Understanding and/or competence in mathematical and unit measurement/conversion

  • Ability to interact, communicate, and collaborate amidst cross-functional matrix organization

  • Must be an excellent team player with strong analytical, organizational and communication skills
